 Progression – learners should be able to continuously assess their progress and improvements as they work through the gamified elements. Learners will be more engaged and motivated if they feel they are making positive progress towards their goal.  Storytelling – the most effective gamified elements involve an engaging story or strong narrative. Structuring learning objectives within a narrative and asking learners to actively participant in the story will increase their enjoyment and engagement with the learning process. Potential Gamification Dynamics Diagram 4.3: Gamification Dynamics Diagram 4.3 shows some of the potential gamification dynamics that can be used to ensure learners are engaged with, and motivated by, the gamified elements of their learning experience. Effective gamification dynamics give learners a reason to keep playing, they include: Achievement , Competition , Challenge , Progress , Collaboration , Surprise and Collection . Successful gamification will incorporate a combination of these dynamics.  Achievement – learners should gain a sense of achievement as they play. If a learner feels they are achieving something then they are more likely to continue engaging.  Competition – introducing competitive elements can encourage participation and increase effort.  Challenge – ensuring the gamified elements provide a challenge to the learner will increase engagement and motivation to continue playing.
